Abstract
BACKGROUND: Different definitions of constipation have been used to estimate its prevalence in the community but this creates difficulties when comparing results from various studies. This study explores the impact of different definitions on prevalence estimates in the same population and compares the performance of simple definitions with the Rome III criteria.Entities:

The Rome III diagnostic criteria for defining chronic constipation
| Rome III Diagnostic Criteria [ | |
|---|---|
Diagnostic criteriaa 1. Must include a. Straining during at least 25% of defaecations b. Lumpy or hard stools in at least 25% of defaecations c. Sensation of incomplete evacuation for at least 25% of defaecations d. Sensation of anorectal obstruction/blockage for at least 25% of defaecations e. Manual manoeuvres to facilitate at least 25% of defaecations (e.g. digital evacuation, support of the pelvic floor) f. Fewer than 3 defaecations per week. 2. Loose stools are rarely present without the use of laxatives 3. Insufficient criteria for irritable bowel syndrome |
aCriteria fulfilled for the last 3 months with symptom onset at least 6 months prior to diagnosis
