Abstract
PURPOSE: There is urgent need for non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers in the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Several studies suggest that retinal thickness is reduced in AD. Here, we aim to test the diagnostic value of retinal thickness in preclinical AD, as defined by cognitively normal individuals with amyloid pathology on PET.Entities:

BCVA = best corrected visual acuity (both eyes averaged); BP ND = non‐displaceable binding potential; GCL = ganglion cell layer; IOP = intra‐ocular pressure (both eyes averaged); IPL = inner plexiform layer; IQR = inter‐quartile range; MMSE = mini mental stat exam; pRNFL = peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer; RNFL = retinal nerve fiber layer; RT = retinal thickness.
Figure 1Boxplots of retinal (layer) thicknesses in the macula for amyloid positive versus amyloid negative participants. Reported are differences in means between amyloid positive and amyloid negative participants as obtained with GEE, corrected for age, gender and diagnosis of diabetes. RNFL = retinal nerve fiber layer, GCL = ganglion cell layer, IPL = inner plexiform layer.
Figure 2Boxplots of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses in 6 sectors for amyloid positive versus amyloid negative participants. Reported are differences in means between amyloid positive and amyloid negative participants as obtained with GEE, corrected for age, gender and diagnosis of diabetes.
