Abstract
BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a parasitic zoonosis resembling malignancy due to its clinically silent infiltrative growth, predominately in the liver. The comorbid psychological burden and fear of disease progression in AE patients have hardly been examined to date. The aim of this study was to evaluate depression, anxiety, quality of life, and fear of disease progression in AE patients. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPALEntities:

AE clinical status: ‘critical’ = AE lesion(s) non resectable, AE progression not well controlled by benzimidazoles, significant adverse benzimidazole effects and/or complications, such as cholangitis, biliary system obstruction, compression of blood vessels or adjacent organs, distant metastases; ‘uncritical’ = AE lesion(s) non resectable, AE progression well controlled by benzimidazoles; ‘cured’ = patient free of disease at long term follow-up after resection of AE lesion(s) and two years of postoperative benzimidazoles.
