Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Exposure to asbestos is the major cause for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), but the causal link of individual cases is difficult to establish for lack of exposure information and long disease latency.Entities:

*Byar approximation of Poisson method was applied to estimate the 95% CI.
†eRR=estimated incidence rate of individual factory divided by the average annual incidence rate of the general population based on Taiwan Cancer Registry in 1980–2009, which was 1.04 per million person-year for genders combined.
‡Factory no 7 had three cases of MPM, but one of the affected workers began his job in factory no 1, where he worked for 3 years; therefore, he was classified as belonging to factory no 1.
MPM, malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Figure 1Geographical locations of asbestos-related factories in Taiwan with clusters of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Red stars represent the eight hot spot factories where cases of MPM were diagnosed among workers. Specific types of asbestos-related industries are shown in different colours, including red: brake lining; brown: asbestos cement; dark green: insulation; light green: serpentine stones; light orange/yellow: other.
