Fig. 1Before neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) formation, tau aggregates and forms tau oligomer and granular tau oligomer. Hyperphosphorylated tau and tau oligomers are involved in synapse loss, and granular tau oligomer causes neuronal loss. Blocking granular tau oligomer formation results in inhibition of neuronal loss accompanying ameliorated neuronal dysfunction in a mouse model.
