Abstract
BACKGROUND: Sports injuries impose physical and economic burdens on high school athletes, yet only 37% of high schools have access to a fulltime certified athletic trainer (AT). Although intuitively there are multiple benefits of AT coverage, research demonstrating the measurable effect of AT coverage on rates and patterns of injury is limited. Our objective was to investigate the epidemiology of girls' basketball and soccer injuries in high schools with and without an AT.Entities:

aAE Athlete-exposure, with one athlete participating in one practice or one competition contributing one AE. AEs may be lower in SISS because participating teams practiced only 3 times per week
bAll RRs calculated with the lower of the two rates as referent group – the group with the significantly higher rate is bolded; CI denotes Confidence Interval. Bolded CIs indicate significance at alpha = 0.05
cRecurrent injuries for HS RIO included recurrence (this academic year) (3.0%), recurrence (previous academic year) (7.1%), other (0.2%) and missing (0.2%). Recurrent injuries for SISS included recurrent injury from this season (10.6%), recurrent injury from previous season (10.1%), complication of previous injury (2.2%), recurrence of an injury from another sport (5.7%), recurrence of a non-sport injury (4.8%), complication of a previous injury from another sport (0.4%) and missing (2.6%)
