Abstract
BACKGROUND: The elimination of anesthetic agents is a decisive factor in the emergence from general anesthesia. In this pilot study, we hypothesized that hypercapnia would decrease the emergence time from propofol anesthesia by increasing cardiac output and cerebral blood flow.Entities:

Fig. 1.Rebreathing device. The distal part of the rebreathing tube was connected to the patient and the proximal part was connected to a Y-type connector of the corrugated tube. The diameter of rebreathing tube was 1 cm and the length was 12−15 cm.

Mean Time of Emergence Events and Difference between the Hypocapnia and Hypercapnia Groups
| Emergence events | Hypocapnia group (n = 15) | Hypercapnia group (n = 15) | Difference (95% CI) | P value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spontaneous respiration | 8.6 (1.2) | 7.9 (1.0) | −0.7 (−4.0 to 2.5) | 0.645 |
