Abstract
BACKGROUND: Health literacy refers to an individual's ability to find, understand and use health information in order to promote and maintain health. An individual's health literacy may also be influenced by the way health care organisations deliver care. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of hospital service type (public versus private) on individual health literacy.Entities:

aMeasures the odds of each variable if the participant attends the public hospital versus the private hospital
bNot comparable between hospitals due to differences in coding methods
Relationship between Health Literacy Questionnaire mean domain scores by hospital of attendance, with unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios showing the difference in scale scores adjusted for variables known to be related to health literacy and use of hospital services
