Abstract
BACKGROUND: Ergonomic hazards are the most important cause of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in aged para rubber farmers. Ergonomic management comprising improvement of working conditions and muscle-strengthening exercise has been well documented in terms of workers' health benefit. However, those interventions were not adequate to sustain the advantage. Few studies have demonstrated the effect of integrating participatory ergonomic management (PEM) in non-weight-bearing exercise (NWE) and progressive resistance exercise (PRE), and none has focused on aged para rubber farmers with knee OA.Entities:

Description of strengthening exercise (NWE and PRE) undertaken by intervention groups
| No | Strengthening exercise | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Straight-leg raise (sitting) | Sit on a chair and raise your leg to straight position. |
| 2. | Hip abduction (standing) | Hold the wall with one hand, sideways. Lift one leg to the side, keeping the knee straight. Hold for 6–10 seconds and relax. |
| 3. | Hip flexion (standing) | Hold the wall with one hand, sideways. Move one leg forward, keeping the knee straight. Hold for 6–10 seconds and relax. |
| 4. | Hip extension (standing) | Hold the wall with one hand, sideways. Move one leg backward, keeping the knee straight. Hold for 6–10 seconds and relax. |
| 5. | Knee flexion (standing) | Hold the wall with one hand, sideways. Stand on one leg and slowly bend the other knee. Hold for 6–10 seconds and relax. |
| 6. | Knee flexion (lying prone) | Lie prone and fully bend each knee as comfortable. |
| 7. | Hip extension (lying prone) | Lie prone, lift each straightened leg off the bed as comfortable. Hold for 6–10 seconds and relax. |
| 8. | Straight-leg raise (supine) | Lie supine, lift each straightened leg off the bed as comfortable. Hold for 6–10 seconds and relax. |
| 9. | Quad set | Lie supine, place a towel roll under your knee. Pull your toes up and press your knee on the towel. |
