Abstract
Background: Opportunities for HIV testing could be enhanced by offering HIV self-testing (HIVST) in populations that fear stigma and discrimination when accessing conventional HIV counselling and testing. Field experience with HIVST was poorly reported in French-speaking African countries. Objective: To investigate the usability of HIVST in Bangui, Central African Republic.Entities:

$Number (%); £ Statistical analysis were carried out using Pearson’s χ2 test. The students were recruited from recruited from 13 secondary schools and university places in Bangui; MSM were included at the Centre National de Référence des Infections Sexuellement Transmissibles et de la Thérapie Antirétrovirale for care, counselling and adapted intervention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and possibly HIV infection, as described previously [31]; µµµFSW were included in a descriptive, quantitative, population-based cross-sectional survey to assess the typology of female commercial sex work in Bangui, as described previously [32]. Female sex worker: FSW; HIVST: HIV self-testing; MSM: Men who have sex with men; NS: Not significant

* Females were pregnant in 6.0% (n=9). ** Educational level was assessed as follows: i) Unschooled; ii) Poorly educated people, i.e. attending primary school only; iii) Educated people, i.e. attending high school, college or technical school; iv) Highly educated people, with undergraduate or graduate degree; *** Unschooled volunteers and those receiving only primary education included individuals with low level of reading. MSM: Men who have sex with men.
Analytical results of the evaluation questionnaire concerning the ability of the 300 study participants to understand the instruction for use of the HIVST Exacto® Test HIV (Biosynex). The questions raising specific issues concerning the manipulation of the kit, the interpretation of a test result and the consequence of the test results, were asked by the observer and the answers were closed.
