Abstract
BACKGROUND: Sweden has closed all institutions and imposed legislation to ensure service and support for individuals with intellectual disability (ID). Understanding mortality among older individuals with ID is essential to inform development of health promotion and disease control strategies. The control population was matched by sex, birth year and year of first hospitalisation/access to LSS services to individuals with ID. The total follow-up period for individuals with ID was 190,788 person-years, and for the control population was 1,032,245 person-years. The adjusted mortality rate ratio was obtained using conditional fixed-effects Poisson regression
