Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Deep sternal wound infections (DSWIs) are rare but devastating complication after median sternotomy following cardiac surgery. Especially in the presence of artificial material or inadequate preliminary muscle flaps, the pedicled omentum flap is due to its immunological properties, the predetermined flap in salvage procedures.Entities:

Notes: (A) The infected wound with pus flowing around the Gore-Tex prosthesis, (B) Jet lavage after tangential debridement with a scalpel, (C) macroscopically clean situs after debridement and lavage, (D) greater omentum already dissected from the colon, (E) omentum flap wrapped around the Gore-Tex prosthesis, (F) double-layer closure with the formerly used latissimus dorsi flap on top, and (G) clean wound condition without systemic or local signs of infection 3 weeks after surgery.
Abbreviation: DSWI, deep sternal wound infection.
