Figure 1Diagnostic elements possibly supporting the definition of autoimmune psychosis. The diagnosis is suspected if the patient presents psychiatric symptoms (e.g., early age of onset, catatonia), neurological signs, resistant or intolerance to antipsychotic treatment, history of autoimmune disorder, and severe infections. The diagnosis relies on the detection in the circulation of autoantibodies and, particularly, directed against neurotransmitter receptors, such as the glutamate NMDA receptor.
