Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A method of identifying retinal vascular microaneurysms (MAs) in nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: SS-OCT images were acquired in 17 eyes with NPDR using prototype SS-OCT device and fluorescein angiography (FA) images were obtained simultaneously. MAs identified on SS-OCT slabs were correlated to MAs identified on FA.Entities:

Figure 1Identification of MAs on FA and SS-OCT.
Notes: FA (A, C) and two of the corresponding SS-OCT slabs (average 21 slabs reviewed per eye) (B, D) of a right eye with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy. B and D correspond to the area demarcated with the red box in A and C respectively. Representative MAs are noted with arrows in A and B. On SS-OCT, the MAs are shown as hyper-reflective dots. The SS-OCT device (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA, USA) used a laser wavelength centered at 1,060 nm and an acquisition speed of 100,000 A-scans/s. 3×3×3 mm3 raster scans were obtained, centered on the fovea (512 A-scans/B-scan, 512 B-scans/cube, 1,500 pixels of depth).
Abbreviations: FA, fluorescein angiogram; MAs, microaneurysms; SS-OCT, swept-source optical coherence tomography.

Notes: Of the 17 eyes, each eye had MAs analyzed by FA and SS-OCT. In the % detected column, FA diagnosis of MAs is taken as the gold standard and the % of MAs seen on FA that were detected on OCT was calculated.
