Fig 1.A dense glycoprotein coat has been observed in lysosomes – this protects integral membrane proteins from degradation. By contrast, the tonoplast in Arabidopsis leaves appears depleted from large amounts of glycoproteins with multiple N-linked glycans. ‘Y’ indicates the presence of glycans on membrane proteins.
