Abstract
BACKGROUND: Systemic therapy is recommended for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, conventional first-line treatment has generated a plateau in response rate of 25% to 35%. Few studies have shown patients benefit from microwave ablation (MWA) in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This study aims to evaluate safety and efficacy of percutaneous computed tomography-guided MWA as maintenance after first-line treatment for patients with advanced NSCLC.Entities:

Notes:
All data are presented as number (%) of patients, with the exception of tumor location and size
Some patients refused the detection of gene status because of financial reasons.
Tumor size was measured at the initial MWA procedure.
Abbreviations: MWA, microwave ablation; ECOG PS, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status.
Figure 1CT scan images taken during the entire treatment course and follow-up.
Notes: (A) A 69-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma at stage IIIB (T2N3M0) in the left upper lobe. (B) Target tumor regressed to a diameter of 3.8 cm after first-line treatment. (C) Double antennas were inserted simultaneously into the target tumor at prone position. (D) Non-enhanced irregular cavity showed coagulation of the target tumor without residue (complete ablation) 1 month after MWA. (E and F) The ablation zone evolved dynamically to a small fibrotic scar without local recurrence at 3 months (E) and 36 months (F) after MWA.
Abbreviations: CT, computed tomography; MWA, microwave ablation.

Note: “Procedures” means a single intervention episode that consists of one or more microwave ablations performed on one or more tumors.
Abbreviation: MWA, microwave ablation.
Figure 2Kaplan–Meier analysis was applied for the assessment of survival.
Notes: Student’s t-test was performed to identify the predictors for local efficacy. Log-rank analysis was performed to identify the predictors for survival. (A) Local efficacy was significantly correlated with MWA-related PFS (P=0.003). (B) Time interval between best overall response and initial MWA was significantly correlated with PFS (P=0.011). Local efficacy was a predictor of both MWA-related OS (P=0.000) (C) and OS (P=0.001) (D).
Abbreviations: MWA, microwave ablation; PFS, progression-free survival; OS, overall survival; d, days.
