GCT, germ cell tumor; AFP, alpha-fetoprotein; HCG, human chorionic gonadotropin.
Fig. 1(A) The 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS). (B-F) The 5-year EFS according to the risk factors. *LR-histology includes mature teratoma, immature teratoma, and germinoma. HR-histology includes yolk sac tumor, choriocarcinoma, and other mixed germ cell tumors. LR, low-risk; HR, high-risk; AFP, alpha-fetoprotein.
Survival rates according to IGCCCG risk factors
| Risk factor* | 5-Year EFS (%) | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary site | ||
| Mediastinum (n=12) | 66.7±13.6 | 0.001 |
| Nonmediastinum (n=54) | 96.0±2.8 | |
| Metastasis | ||
| Pulmonary (n=6) | 62.5±21.3 | 0.21 |
| Nonpulmonary visceral (n=11) | 90.9±8.7 | |
| AFP (ng/mL) | ||
| ≤10,000 (n=46) | 88.6±4.8 | 0.52 |
| >10,000 (n=18) | 93.8±6.1 |
Values are presented as mean±standard deviation.
*Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) were not analyzed because one patient showed HCG >50,000 IU/L, and elevated LD levels (>10-fold normal levels) were not detected in any patient.
Multivariate analysis for risk factors
| Risk factor | RR (95% CI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Age>10 yr | 0.7 (0.1-10.4) | 0.79 |
| High-risk histology* | 10.3 (0.7-151.8) | 0.09 |
| Metastasis | 2.1 (0.4-13.0) | 0.41 |
| AFP>10,000 ng/mL | 0.3 (0.1-3.2) | 0.33 |
| Mediastinal tumor | 19.4 (1.3-297.7) | 0.03 |
RR, relative risk; CI, confidence interval; AFP, alpha-fetoprotein.
*Malignant germ cell tumors, except mature teratoma, immature teratoma, and germinoma.
