Abstract
BACKGROUND: Inappropriate thromboprophylaxis is a serious problem in Iran. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the most important causes of morbidity in patients in surgical and obstetrics departments and intensive care units (ICUs). It is a leading preventable cause of mortality among in-patients. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of VTE and its epidemiology in an Iranian population for the first time.Entities:

Approximate risks of DVT in hospitalized patients (1)
| Medical patients | 10–20 |
| General surgery | 15–40 |
| Major gynecologic surgery | 15–40 |
| Major urologic surgery | 15–40 |
| Neurosurgery | 15–40 |
| Stroke | 20–50 |
| Hip or knee arthroplasty and HFS | 40–60 |
| Major trauma | 40–80 |
| Spinal cord injury | 60–80 |
| Critical care patients | 10–80 |
| Vascular surgery | 15–25 |
| Thoracic surgery | 18–51 |
| Coronary artery bypass surgery | 16–48 |
All rates except for thoracic surgery and coronary artery bypass surgery are based on objective diagnostic screening for asymptomatic DVT in patients not receiving thromboprophylaxis.
Thoracic surgery rate is based on objective diagnostic screening for asymptomatic DVT, but thromboprophylaxis received by patients is not clarified.
Coronary artery bypass surgery rate is based on objective diagnostic screening for asymptomatic DVT and in patients receiving thromboprophylaxis.
