All perception outcome measures were asked in relation to both the booklet and the report, with the exception of two additional outcome measures for the report: ‘I liked the tone of the report’ and ‘Have you completed the lists on the sheet at the end of the report’.

Dependence score was computed from the number of cigarettes per day and time from waking to first cigarette.
Deprivation score was computed by scoring one point for each of the following: renting their home, no car, no qualifications, manual occupation and being unemployed or student.
