Abstract
Despite decades of research, mitochondrial epigenetics remains a controversial notion. Recent findings, however, indicate that dysfunctional mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) methylation could underlie aging and disease. Unraveling such a level of regulation will be essential in the understanding of and in interfering with the role of mitochondria in many physiological and pathophysiological processes. Keywords: DNA hydroxymethylation; DNA methylation; mitochondrial epigenetics; mitoepigenetics; mtDNA; mtDNMT1
