Abstract
Vertebrate homeodomain proteins are transcription factors whose genes can be isolated via a conserved DNA-binding domain called the homeobox. We review recent studies suggesting that one function of these genes is the early subdivision of the embryo along the antero-posterior axis into 'fields' of cells with different developmental potential.Mesh:
