Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim was to determine which of three sets of metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria (International Diabetes Federation [IDF], National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III [ATP III], and European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance [EGIR]) best predicts the coronary artery calcification (CAC) score in a cross-sectional study. This has not been evaluated in previous studies.Entities:

Baseline characteristics of subjects according to the presence of CACS
Values are presented as number (%) or mean ± SD.
CACS, coronary artery calcium score; HOMA-IR, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance; IDF, International Diabetes Federation; ATP III, National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III; EGIR, European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance.
Spearman correlation of CACS with metabolic variables
CACS, coronary artery calcium score; BMI, body mass index; SBP, systolic blood pressure; DBP, diastolic blood pressure; HDL-C, high density lipoprotein cholesterol; HOMA-IR, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance; LDL-C, low density lipoprotein cholesterol.
Odds ratios from multivariate logistic regression analysis of each set of metabolic syndrome criteria as a predictor of coronary artery calcium
MetS, metabolic syndrome; OR, odds ratio; CI, confidence interval; IDF, International Diabetes Federation; ATP III, National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III; EGIR, European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance.
aAdjusted for age and sex.
bAdjusted for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking status, and exercise habits.
cAdjusted for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking status, and exercise habits.
Odds ratios from multivariate logistic regression analysis of each set of metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria as a predictor of coronary artery calcification according to the number of MetS components
Values are presented as number (%).
CAC, coronary artery calcium; OR, odds ratio; CI, confidence interval; IDF, International Diabetes Federation; ATP III, National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III; EGIR, European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance.
aModel 1 is adjusted for age and sex.
bModel 2 is adjusted for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking status, and exercise habits.
cModel 3 is adjusted for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking status, exercise habits.
