Abstract
BACKGROUND: The increasing and rapid spread of metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) producing Enterobacteriaceae, particularly Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae represents an emerging public health threat. However, limited data is available on MBL production in clinical isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae from Nepal. We have therefore undertaken this study to ascertain the incidence of MBL production in clinical isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae at a tertiary care teaching hospital in central Nepal.Entities:

Figure 1Modified Hodge test using a 10 μg ertapenem disc. Isolates 1 and 2 produce carbapenemase and are positive by this test. Isolate 2 does not produce carbapenemase and is negative by this test.
Figure 2Positive combined disc test for detection of MBL producer by use of EDTA. The test isolate shows a zone diameter of >4 mm around the imipenem-EDTA disc compared to that of the imipenem disc alone.
