aPotential risk factors not considered in this model include gender, age, and location of residence (excluded by the matched design); prior suicide attempt (excluded because controls were excluded if they had made a prior attempt); acute stress (which was only present in the cases, not in the controls); and impulsiveness and aggression (which were only assessed in a subset of subjects). All other factors that were significant in the univariate analysis (Table 2) were considered in this model. The analysis was conducted using both forward and backward stepwise methods (to confirm the stability of the result).
