Precipitation of copper using Desulfovibrio sp.

V V Panchanadikar1, R N Kar.

Abstract

Sulphate-reducing bacteria isolated from submerged soil samples of paddy fields effectively precipitated copper from aqueous solution with maximum effect (75%) at 25 ppm Cu(2+). As the copper concentration was increased to 100 ppm, precipitation efficiency decreased significantly. The use of bacteria to precipitate heavy metal ions from aqueous effluents is discussed.
