Abstract
BACKGROUND: Equations to estimate GFR have not been well validated in the elderly and may misclassify persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We measured GFR and compared the performance of the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), the Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-Epi) and the Berlin Initiative Study (BIS) equations based on creatinine and/or cystatin C in octogenarians and nonagenarians.Entities:

Values expressed as mean ± SD (interquartile range, except for age where range is minimum-maximum) or N (%). GFR: glomerular filtration rate. BMI: body mass index; weight in kg divided by the square of the height in meters.
Figure 1Boxplot of measured and estimated GFR according to several equations. Boxes indicate medians (line inside box), quartiles (upper and lower margins of the box). Vertical lines are 95% confidence intervals. The dotted line represents the GFR cutoff of 60 ml/min/1.73 m2.
