Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although several studies have suggested overlaps between gastroesophageal reflux symptom and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the studies for the association between erosive esophagitis and IBS are rare. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association among IBS, non-erosive reflux disease (NERD), and erosive esophagitis.Entities:

FigureFlow of study participants. H. pylori, Helicobacter pylori; PPI, proton pump inhibitor; H2, histamine receptor 2; NSAID, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug; IBS, irritable bowel syndrome.
Rsik Factors for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
IBS, irritable bowel syndrome as diagnosed by Rome III criteria; H. pylori, Helicobacter pylori.
Risk Factors for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
NERD, non-erosive reflux disease; H. pylori, Helicobacter pylori.
aANOVA test was performed to compare 3 groups.
Risk Factors for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in Multivariate Analysis
aErosive esophagitis refers to reflux esophagitis, Los Angeles classification (A-D); bAdjusted for age, sex, waist circumference, smoking status, drinking status, hiatus hernia, Helicobacter pylori, diabetes, use of antidepressant and psychological distress. Age and waist circumference were measured as continuous variables; cPsychological distress was measured by partial questionnaires from revised Hopkins symptom checklist 90.
IBS, irritable bowel syndrome as diagnosed by Rome III critera; NERD, non-erosive reflux disease; OR, odds ratio; CI, confidence interval; H. pylori, Helicobacter pylori. Risk group for somatization, ≥ 18 in men and ≥ 23 in women; risk group for anxiety, ≥ 17 in men and ≥ 19 in women; risk group for depression, ≥ 25 in men and ≥ 28 in women; risk group for hostility, ≥ 11 in men and ≥ 10 in women.

Overlap of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Non-erosive Reflux Disease in Multivariate Analysis
aReference is neither IBS nor NERD, bPsychological distress was measured by partial questionnaires from revised Hopkins symptom checklist 90.
