Cadmium resistance is widespread in S. aureus where it may be linked with penicillin resistance [28, 29]. Although not a therapeutic agent, cadmium is toxic to bacteria including S. aureus and in response to this toxicity, the bacteria have developed resistance to cadmium [30].
