Review of antibiotic prophylaxis for bacterial endocarditis in relation to radiological procedures.

P T O'Connell1, J B Partridge.

Abstract

Although the risk of endocarditis from radiological instrumentation is low, it is recommended that antibiotic cover is used for certain invasive procedures in patients at high risk. The barium enema is, in this context, included in procedures requiring cover. Prosthetic heart valves are particularly liable to infection.
