[The multidimensional geriatric assessment].

U Sommeregger1.

Abstract

This review presents comprehensive geriatric assessment as a diagnostic process in steps: step 1-geriatric screening for purposes of case finding, step 2-basic geriatric assessment, step 3-extended problem-centred assessment. The article specifies situations in which comprehensive geriatric assessment is recommended and when not, as well as the vital risk situations for geriatric patients and the respective appropriate assessment tools. The goal of the process is a clear overview of the specific resources and deficits of the elderly patient. The results provide a basis for rational individual decision-making in various medical issues.
