MHealth: promise and pitfalls.

David Levin1.

Abstract

Mobile healthcare presents many opportunities to improve the value of healthcare for providers, patients, and payers. It will play a critical role in the move from volume- to value-based care and in enhancing patient engagement and empowerment. Developments in the broader consumer market portend and drive the eventual adoption and impact of mHealth. Substantial barriers exist and must be addressed, including device management, privacy and security, data quality, workflow integration, interface design, and overall resistance to change in healthcare. Organizations would be wise to pay close attention to this rapidly developing area. However, they should resist the temptation to "just do something" and instead adopt a strategic approach that includes carefully determining the value proposition of each opportunity and embracing full life-cycle management.
