Figure 1. Schematic of crypt regeneration during the colonic wound healing. After injury, an adjacent crypt expands into the wound bed and forms a wound channel. In parallel, Wnt5a-positive mesenchymal cells focally suppress proliferation of adjacent epithelial cells in the wound channel and induce its subdivision into crypts.
