Abstract
BACKGROUND: The intake of a Western diet enriched in animal fat has been shown to be a major risk factor for Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Previous rodent studies have indicated that these conditions may be triggered by the accumulation of the sphingolipid ceramide in insulin-sensitive tissues. However, data are lacking in this regard from both humans and non-human primates.Entities:

Figure 2Plasma ceramide levels from control, pre-diabetic and diabetic Rhesus Macaque monkeys. Various ceramide species were separated and detected via liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS), and are expressed as ng ml−1 of plasma. Inset figure shows total ceramide levels. Error bars indicate s.e.m. *Statistically significant difference from corresponding control value, P<0.05. †Statistically significant difference from corresponding pre-diabetic value, P<0.05.
