Sensing mitochondrial homeostasis: the protein import machinery takes control.

F-Nora Vögtle1, Chris Meisinger.

Abstract

Mitochondrial homeostasis is maintained by several quality control mechanisms, including an unfolded protein response that in turn elicits a transcriptional response. In a recent issue of Science, Nargund et al. (2012) propose a sensing mechanism for unfolded proteins' accumulation in the mitochondrial matrix that involves the mitochondrial protein import machinery.
