Abstract
BACKGROUND: Several genetic polymorphisms have been reported to modify the effects of smoking on serum lipid levels. The objective of this study was to investigate whether longevity-associated mitochondrial DNA 5178 (Mt5178) C/A polymorphism modifies the effects of habitual smoking on the risk of dyslipidemia in middle-aged Japanese subjects.Entities:

HDL; high-density lipoprotein. LDL; low-density lipoprotein. Age, body mass index, serum HDL cholesterol levels, serum LDL cholesterol levels, serum triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose levels are given as means ± S.D. For smoking status, coffee consumption, alcohol consumption, antihypertensive medication use, hypo-HDL cholesterolemia, hyper-LDL cholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, P values were calculated by chi-squared test. All P values depict significance of differences between Mt5178C and Mt5178A.
