Abstract
BACKGROUND: The 'lifetime risk' of cancer is generally estimated by combining current incidence rates with current all-cause mortality ('current probability' method) rather than by describing the experience of a birth cohort. As individuals may get more than one type of cancer, what is generally estimated is the average (mean) number of cancers over a lifetime. This is not the same as the probability of getting cancer.Entities:

Abbreviations: AMP=adjusted for multiple primaries; NMSC=non-melanoma skin cancer.
The incidence data used only includes the first primary diagnosis of any malignant neoplasm (excluding NMSC) for each patient.
When a final age band of 85+ is used instead of 90+, the estimate is 39.2%.
When a final age band of 85+ is used instead of 90+, there is no change in the lifetime risk estimate.
