Abstract
T helper (Th) cells are crucial for the development of immunity to infections and inflammatory disease. The acquisition of specific cytokine-secreting profiles, primed by the cytokine microenvironment, is required for effector function of Th cells. The most recent addition to the growing list of effector subsets are Th9 cells that secrete IL-9. In this review, we propose a model for the transcriptional regulation of the Il9 gene in IL-9-expressing T cells and the relatedness of this subset to other Th phenotypes. We suggest that transcription factors restricted to certain Th subsets and common among several subsets might play a role in the plasticity of Th9 cells.Entities:
