Black stump to ivory tower: a personal view of research in general practice.

This article describes the author's own voyage of discovery in research, from the curiosity of his medical school days, through the isolation of general practice in the Australian outback, through development of a major survey, to participation in the formulation of the International Classification of Health Problems in Primary Care.
