Abstract
BACKGROUND: Physicians experience workplace stress and draw on different coping strategies. The primary goal of this paper is to use interview data to explore physicians' self reported coping strategies. In addition, questionnaire data is utilized to explore the degree to which the coping strategies are used and are associated with feelings of emotional exhaustion, a key symptom of burnout.Entities:

a Based on Department and division counts for the Health Region June 2006 and 2008
b Includes cardiology and critical care in 2008
c Included one anesthesiologist and three family physicians for 2006. In our 2008 survey, we asked physicians if they practiced in a rural area in a separate question about location of practice. The 82 rural physicians in our sample are classified both in their specialty area and as rural physicians.
