P value refers to the differences between elective and rescue NIV groups. Parameters are expressed in mean ± standard deviation except for age and CMV duration (median and range) and gender (%). Note that the addition of patients with underlying conditions exceeds the total number of patients because each patient might be included in different subgroups (see Methods section).NIV: non invasive ventilation; PRISM: paediatric risk of mortality (score); CMV: conventional mechanical ventilation; HR: heart rate; RR: respiratory rate; FiO2: fraction of inspired oxygen; PCO2: arterial partial pressure of oxygen dioxide; PO2: arterial partial pressure of oxygen.
