Abstract
BACKGROUND: In many high income developed countries, obesity is inversely associated with educational level. In some countries, a widening gap of obesity between educational groups has been reported. The aim of this study was to assess trends in body mass index (BMI) and in prevalence of overweight and obesity and their association with educational level in the adult Swiss population.Entities:

BMI: body mass index; overweight is defined as a BMI ≥ 25 and <30 kg/m2. Obesity is defined as a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. Results are expressed as number of subjects and (percentage) or as mean ± standard deviation. Statistical analysis by chi-square or analysis of variance: NS, not significant; ***, p < 0.001. For BMI, further adjustment on age led to similar findings: F test = 28.8 (p < 0.001) for men and F test = 44.1 (p < 0.001) for women.

Date were weighted or corrected for self-report bias.
Overweight is defined as a BMI ≥ 25 and <30 kg/m2. Obesity is defined as a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. Results are expressed as percentage, obtained using original sample data weighted to reflect the Swiss population (uncorrected, weighted), BMI corrected for reporting bias (corrected, unweighted) and BMI corrected for reporting bias and weighted to reflect the Swiss population (corrected, weighted). a gender-specific correction; b, gender and age-specific correction.
