Ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy system for diagnosis and minimally invasive excision of intraductal papilloma without nipple discharge.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: As intraductal papilloma (IP) includes both benign and malignant lesions, it is difficult to decide whether the patient should merely be followed up. The purpose of this study is to validate the ultrasound (US)-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy system (Mammotome) for diagnosis and minimally invasive excision of IP.
METHODS: Six women with breast cystic-solid lesions without nipple discharge underwent B-US-guided 8-gauge Mammotome biopsy. Interval US surveillance was performed at a median time of 7 months (range 5-12 months).
RESULTS: All lesions were removed accurately and thoroughly with satisfactory cosmetic outcomes. All of them were histologically diagnosed as IP. No clinically significant hematoma developed.
CONCLUSIONS: The US-guided 8-gauge Mammotome biopsy provides an accurate pathologic diagnosis and successful complete excision of cystic-solid breast lesions. This technique appears to be an alternative to surgical biopsy in IP patients without nipple discharge.
