Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To discuss the history, current state, and future directions of umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation as it relates to the emerging field of cellular therapies. DATA SOURCES: Research studies, articles, and personal experiences.
CONCLUSION: Transplantation using hematopoietic stem cells from UCB is a life-saving option for patients with select oncologic and immunologic diseases, bone marrow failure, hemoglobinopathies, and inborn errors of metabolism.
