The ring: a leitmotif in plasmonics.

Peter Nordlander1.

Abstract

An interesting paper in this issue describes an experiment that is an optical analogue of the "quantum corral" on metal surfaces constructed and observed using scanning tunneling microscopy more than a decade ago. In this Perspective, the mechanism underlying the confinement and manipulation of light in metallic nanorings and related structures are discussed, with an emphasis on recent results.
