Abstract
BACKGROUND: Most individuals at risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) can reduce risk factors through diet and exercise before resorting to drug treatment. The effect of a combination of resistance training with vegetable-based (soy) versus animal-based (whey) protein supplementation on CVD risk reduction has received little study. The study's purpose was to examine the effects of 12 weeks of resistance exercise training with soy versus whey protein supplementation on strength gains, body composition and serum lipid changes in overweight, hyperlipidemic men.Entities:

Pre- and post-study.
1All values are averages ± SEM; n = 9 for placebo, n = 9 for whey, n = 10 for soy.
2 Pre = baseline, prior to exercise and supplementation; post = end of 12 weeks.
3 Only the P value for pre versus post, with diet groups combined are presented, since diet effects were not significant and there was no interaction between diet and time (pre versus post).
ab Values with a common superscript are not significantly different, at baseline (P < 0.05).
