Abstract
This paper describes and discusses some of the clinical applications of the posterior interosseous forearm flap in hand reconstruction. It is based on a series of 20 patients in whom a distally based posterior interosseous island flap was used for closure of defects on the dorsum of the hand. Flaps survived completely in 16 patients. Partial necrosis occurred in one flap. Total flap loss occurred in two patients (20%). The flaps adapted well to the recipient site and had excellent color and texture match.
