Abstract
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a clinical diagnosis that has a significant impact on health care management around the world. Early clinical suspicion and prompt empiric antimicrobial therapies are mandatory in patients with CAP. This article provides a review of recent studies and guidelines addressing antimicrobial therapy for hospitalized patients with CAP.Entities:

Empiric antimicrobial therapy to treat community-acquired pneumonia in the ward service
| Empiric treatment | Comments |
|---|---|
| Intravenous fluoroquinolone monotherapy (levofloxacin, gatifloxacin, or moxifloxacin) | Covers well |
| or | Fluoroquinolones also cover these pathogens, including DRSP. |
| Intravenous beta-lactam third-generation cephalosporins (ceftriaxone or cefotaxime) | |
| or | |
| Beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor (ampicillin-clavulanate) | |
| plus | |
| Intravenous macrolide (azithromycin) | |
Abbreviation: DRSP, drug-resistant S pneumoniae.
