Abstract
BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancers displaying high-degree microsatellite instability (MSI-H) have an improved prognosis compared to microsatellite stable (MSS) cancers. The observation of pronounced lymphocytic infiltrates suggests that MSI-H cancers are inherently more immunogenic. We aimed to compare the gene expression profiles of MSI-H and MSS cancers to provide evidence for an activated immune response in the former.Entities:

For RT-PCR analysis groups were matched for age, tumour side and Dukes' Stage. Two MSI-H patients had two tumours each.
Figure 1Two-way hierarchical clustering by the 542 most significantly differentially expressed genes between MSS and MSI-H colorectal cancers. Samples arranged along the x-axis and genes along the y-axis. Each square represents the expression level of a given gene in an individual sample. Red represents increased expression and blue represents decreased expression relative to the normalised expression of the gene across all samples. Samples with similar gene expression profiles are clustered together.
A highly selective list of gene specific probes that are differentially expressed (P < 0.005) between MSI-H and MSS colorectal cancers with a fold-change of at least 1.5.
