Revisiting the definition of biocompatibility.

David Williams1.

Abstract

My main conclusion is that the original Williams' definition of biocompatibility still stands with respect to individual materials, but we have to move to more specific definitions within each of the varied applications of biomaterials such as those described above, and more will follow. It is time for the discussion and definition of biocompatibility to move from a materials base to an applications base.
