*American Cancer Society guidelines in effect at the time of the study were: 1.) Beginning at age 20, breast self-exams monthly and clinical breast exam every three years. 2.) Beginning at age 40, clinical breast exams annually plus mammography every one or two years. 3.) Beginning at age 50, annual clinical breast exams and mammograms along with monthly breast self-exams.
